Birth time unknown: what your chart still reveals

Many people know their birth date but not the exact time. That is the most common reason a chart becomes uncertain, and also the most misunderstood. Without a time a chart is not worthless, it is only blurry in certain places, and those places can be named cleanly.

What still holds without a time

The positions of most bodies depend on the date, not the minute. The Sun moves about one degree per day, the outer planets slower still. Your Sun, your Venus, your Mars and the signs they occupy are practically stable across an entire birthday. Most aspects between the planets barely change over the course of a day either.

That means signs, planetary aspects and the large part of what a chart says about character apply even without a time. Anyone who thinks nothing is possible without a birth time underestimates how much the date alone carries.

What the time really needs

Two things depend directly on the minute:

• The Ascendant, the degree rising in the east, moves about one degree every four minutes. Over a day it runs through the entire zodiac. Without a time it cannot be determined.
• The houses, which divide the local sky into twelve areas of life, depend on the Ascendant and Midheaven. Without a time it is not fixed which house a planet falls into.

The Moon is a special case. It moves about thirteen degrees per day, more than half a degree per hour. On most days its sign stays stable across the day, but when it sits near a sign change, the time can decide the moon sign.

How to handle it honestly

Serious software does two things: it computes what holds without a time, and it does not hide what stays uncertain. A chart that claims an exact Ascendant and fixed houses without a birth time fakes a precision it does not have.
