Mercury retrograde: what actually happens, plus every 2026 and 2027 date

No planet moves backwards. Mercury retrograde is a change of perspective: Mercury orbits the Sun faster than the Earth does, and three to four times a year the geometry of the two orbits makes Mercury appear to reverse against the zodiac for about three weeks. The planet never slows down. The reversal happens only in our view from Earth.

That makes retrograde a computed, checkable event: there is an exact minute when Mercury’s apparent motion in longitude hits zero and turns negative, the station retrograde, and an exact minute when it turns positive again, the station direct. Everything in between is retrograde; everything about it fits in an ephemeris table.

The 2026 dates

All three 2026 retrogrades happen in water signs, and each one stays inside a single sign:

• February 26 to March 20/21, in Pisces: stations retrograde at 22°33’ Pisces, direct at 8°29’ Pisces.
• June 29 to July 23, in Cancer: stations retrograde at about 26° Cancer, direct at 16°19’ Cancer.
• October 24 to November 13/14, in Scorpio: stations retrograde at 20°58’ Scorpio, direct at 5°02’ Scorpio.

The double dates have a simple reason: the station falls on a single moment in Universal Time, and depending on your time zone that moment lands on one calendar day or the next. A tool that computes the station to the minute, in your time zone, does not need the slash.

The 2027 dates

In 2027 the pattern shifts into air signs, and every retrograde walks backwards across a sign boundary:

• February 9 to March 3: from 5°58’ Pisces back to 20°55’ Aquarius.
• June 10 to July 4: from 6°21’ Cancer back to 27°28’ Gemini.
• October 7 to 28: from 4°55’ Scorpio back to 19°18’ Libra.

The shadow phase, without the drama

Before each retrograde, Mercury passes for the first time through the degrees it will later re-cross: the pre-shadow. After the station direct, it needs a second forward pass to clear the same stretch: the post-shadow. Some calendars stretch “Mercury retrograde” across the entire shadow period, which roughly doubles its length and its dread. Worth keeping apart: the retrograde is a precisely bounded interval between two stations. The shadow phases mark the degrees involved, nothing more. If you track a natal planet at one of those degrees, the shadow tells you Mercury will cross it three times; that triple contact is the mechanically interesting part.

What to do with the dates

Astrologically, Mercury rules the traffic of everyday life: messages, contracts, devices, travel. The retrograde folklore says all of it breaks. The sober reading is smaller and more useful: three times a year there is a three-week window in which reviewing beats launching, and the window has exact boundaries. Whether you use it that way is a choice, not a law of nature.
