How accurate are astrology apps? How to check yours

Most astrology apps show positions without saying where they come from. What accuracy means for a birth chart, which errors actually matter, and a five-minute test for any app.

Every astrology app shows you planetary positions. Almost none tells you where they come from, how exact they are, or what would count as wrong. That is worth fixing, because “is this app accurate?” is one of the few questions in astrology with a hard, checkable answer.

What accuracy means here

A birth chart is a set of measurements: ten bodies at specific ecliptic longitudes, an Ascendant, house cusps. For each of these there are reference values. The industry standard is the Swiss Ephemeris, itself built on NASA/JPL planetary data; observatories and professional software agree with it to fractions of an arcsecond. An app is accurate to the degree it reproduces those references.

The useful unit is the arcminute: one sixtieth of a degree. A position that is off by one arcminute is displayed identically in any chart wheel. Errors become visible in steps:

  • A few arcminutes: invisible in practice. Aspects, orbs and sign placements all come out the same.
  • Around a degree: exact aspect timing shifts by hours to days; a tight orb can flip a contact in or out.
  • Several degrees: sign cusps and house cusps start to break. Anyone born near a cusp can get a different sign.

Where errors of the last kind come from is rarely the ephemeris: it is time handling. A wrong time zone, a missed daylight saving rule, or a birth time interpreted as UTC moves the Ascendant by up to 15 degrees per hour. The most common source of a “wrong chart” is not astronomy but the clock.

Why apps get away with vagueness

Because a chart has no visible error bars. A position that is off by two degrees looks exactly as confident as a correct one. And because the reading layer sits on top: if the text says “you value independence,” no one can falsify the input positions through the prose. The only way to know is to compare numbers, which requires the app to show numbers at all. An app that shows no degrees has made itself uncheckable. That is convenient mostly for its maker.

The five-minute test for any app

  1. Take a birth date, time and place you know precisely.
  2. Cast the chart in the app and in one reference: astro.com’s free chart service, Solar Fire, or Astro Gold all track Swiss Ephemeris.
  3. Compare three things: the Ascendant degree (tests time and place handling), the Moon degree (tests the fastest body), and one slow planet (tests the ephemeris itself).
  4. Make sure both tools use the same house system and the same zodiac (tropical vs. sidereal), or you will measure a convention, not an error.
  5. Anything beyond a couple of arcminutes on the planets, or beyond a degree on the Ascendant, deserves an explanation from the app’s maker.

What we hold ourselves to

That invitation is the actual point. Any app can claim precision. The question to ask of yours is simply: against what, by how much, and where do I check?
